Technology has come a long way. We are able to do so many things and perform so many tasks that weren’t even thought possible less than thirty years ago. We can talk to people on the other side of the world as though they are sitting right across the table from us. We are able to keep up to date with all the breaking news from all over the world, and we can research almost anything we like simply by typing something into a search engine. With this technological surge, there has also been a big boost for online games. More and more people are buying consoles like PlayStations, and the internet is stuffed full with lots of games that are played thousands of times every single day.

Sometimes, however, it’s nice to step back from all of that. While technology does offer us a lot, sometimes it can get a bit much. Speaking from personal experience, I know that there are a few hours every now and then where I need to put my mobile phone to the side and just focus on some other things. When I do this I’ll tend to spend time with friends, write something or read a book. Another old fashioned way to spend this time, however, is by playing a board game. This may seem as though its a bit outdated, but I completely disagree with that. When I was younger, there weren’t many more enjoyable things to do than play a board game like chess or connect 4. There are a variety of games to play, so is it worth it? Read on to find out.

There are plenty of board games to choose from

When you’re facing that inner debate over whether board games are still worth buying, there aren’t many more compelling cases than this point; there are so many to choose from. It’s not as though you’re ever going to be short on ideas and you have an almost infinite number of options like kids toys and also You could literally go around your family, friends or whoever you’re going to be playing with and have a conversation about what your selection will be. Not everyone, after all, will be willing to play the same game so you might have to compromise. At the same time, however, you could just choose to buy more than one game at a time and spend time playing them all at different times.

There are a lot of board games that I believe will always be timeless classics. For starters there is the connect 4 in a row game, more commonly known as just connect 4. This is a great one for all of your family and friends; if you’re playing with younger children it’s really easy to understand and get a grip of, and if you’re playing with friends your own age it’s still a great way to get competitive and strategic. There are so many different combinations and so many different ways to win, and that’s why I reckon you should give it a consideration. It might seem as though it’s a bit old fashioned, but we all need a bit of that in our lives.

Anyone can play them- they aren’t excluded

I will admit there may be a few setbacks to playing board games and I’m sure there are plenty of other articles out there which argue this. However, I’m just a sucker for them and I think part of that comes from the fact that you can play them with whoever you like. Typically, the time I play them the most is when I’m sitting on nights in with my family or when we have parties and there are lots of family and friends round to visit us. Everyone can be included, no one has to feel left out and rules tend to be really easy. This means that even if there are young children or older grandparents in attendance, nothing will be hard to understand and they’ll be able to join in just fine. I think this is part of the magic of board games and provides yet another reason as to why you should consider buying one (or some).

I think board games also have a unique power to be able to bring people of all ages together. If you’re sitting at a computer playing online games, this certainly isn’t possible and it won’t exactly set a family gathering alight. However, with board games everyone will be able to take part and can be sociable together again.

You can take board games anywhere

Board games, as you very well know, are also portable. If you only play games on a computer or something big like that, you won’t be able to carry it with you on a trip or to a family gathering. However, if you spend a little bit of money on a board game then you’ll be able to take it anywhere. Just finish playing, pack it up into its box and you can take it wherever you fancy. If you’re going for a caravan trip, you can take it. If you’re going round to a friend’s house, you can take it.

There are also mini-games for a lot of board games which are really great. When I was younger I had mini chess sets and mini connect 4 which I was able to take on car trips with me and this could be a great option for you- especially if you have young children who are easily bored on long trips.

They aren’t that expensive

If you need one more reason as to why you should think about buying a board game, the price tag should be a good one. Board games aren’t exactly the most expensive of contraptions and once you’ve bought one, you’ll most likely have it for years to come. They never go out of date and you can use them as much as you want- I know I still own board games I’ve had since early childhood and they are still in perfect working order. Now that’s what I call value for money.
